It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gene D. Burton, GBA Founder, healthcare executive and industry leader. He was 89 years old.
Mr. Burton’s esteemed career spanned more than a half century of healthcare leadership – including 18 years at the helm of Gene Burton & Associates and 10 years as its chairman, as well as 20 years directing the purchasing, materials management and equipment planning departments for Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) and Humana.
As one of the pioneers in the industry, Mr. Burton literally created the field of medical equipment and technology planning by bringing together the two disciplines.
[jump to full article] For many years, GBA was the only firm in the country to offer both equipment planning and technology/communications planning for healthcare facilities. Mr. Burton envisioned “hospitals of the future” that would rely on system-wide, advanced communications technology, and he urged healthcare architects and hospital executives to build the infrastructure years before the technology was available.
In the late 1990s, healthcare equipment and communications technology converged, and GBA led the dramatic change in helping architects and engineers design and build today’s technology-centered facilities. Under his leadership, GBA established and maintained its position as the largest independent healthcare technology consulting firm in the country.
When Mr. Burton retired to the role of chairman in 2006, GBA had grown to 60 highly skilled healthcare consultants and staff in three offices, and the firm had completed more than 700 projects of all types and sizes, with the nation’s top healthcare systems and leading firms in healthcare architecture, engineering, construction and contracting. In the years following his retirement, Mr. Burton remained a close advisor to GBA President and CEO Suzan Logan and mentor to nearly all of the firm’s long-time employees.
“Mr. Burton was a legend in his industry and beloved by his colleagues,” said Logan, principal at Mazzetti GBA, who led GBA’s merger with Mazzetti earlier this year. “Always the innovator, Mr. Burton leaves behind a great legacy in the healthcare technologies industry. He was a remarkable leader and a mentor to his employees as well as countless students and young professionals pursuing a career in our industry.
“My colleagues and I in the technology division at Mazzetti GBA are truly grateful we had the privilege to call Mr. Burton our mentor and friend. He will be dearly missed and always honored.”
Mr. Burton is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jamie Burton, their three sons and a granddaughter.

Paul McCoy in a ceremony in College Station, Texas. The Gene D. Burton Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007.

GBA Participates in Two 5Ks for Children
Spring 2016
Representatives of GBA’s LiveIt! employee wellness program from both the Franklin and Dallas offices participated in 5K races to support healing and happiness for children.
On March 26th, Carrie Condry and Mike Cardinal from GBA, and friends Leticia Canon and Natalie Dinh participated the Firefly Run Dallas in Plano, TX. The race was held at nighttime, and the runners were able to see
real Texas longhorn cattle along the course! Proceeds from the race benefitted Children’s Health System of Texas, known as Children’s Health, which is the seventh largest pediatric health care provider in the country,
receiving more than 760,000 patient visits. The mission at Children’s Health is to make life better for children.
A sunny day was the setting for the Camp Horizon 5K held April 2, in Mt. Juliet, TN. Victoria Lentini, Cynthia Mercante, and Robert Vogt from GBA and friend Mark Oyston joined an overflow crowd of runners and walkers.
Proceeds from the race will help send kids with cancer to a week of fun and enjoyment during the summer of 2016.

To support GBA’s LiveIt! wellness program as well as a worthy cause, employees from the GBA headquarters Franklin office participated in the Kids Chance 5K in Nashville, TN, on Saturday, June 6. Kids Chance Tennessee is a
non-profit organization dedicated to helping kids who need assistance for college due to a parent or legal guardian having been fatally or catastrophically injured in a work-related accident.

GBA uses technology for virtual cross country scavenger hunt

The GBA offices in Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana, Nevada, and California teamed up over a long lunch for a cookout and virtual scavenger hunt. The staff, connected via web conference and FaceTime, conducted tasks included answering questions related to GBA’s project work, searching for specific artifacts in local and remote locations,
creating contraptions out of everyday objects, and displaying artistic talents.

The April edition of MCD Magazine eNews featured the opening of Northeast Arkansas Baptist Hospital and Clinic, in Jonesboro,
Arkansas. GBA provided Medical Equipment Consulting during Design, Construction Project Management, Procurement, and Installation Oversight services on all three buildings: the 550,000 SF, 181-bed replacement hospital;
220,000 SF physician clinic and 33,000 SF standalone cancer center. The architect was Earl Swensson Associates in Nashville.

As part of the ongoing commitment GBA President and CEO, Suzan Logan, has to serving communities in need, both the Franklin headquarters and the Dallas branch offices participated in service projects on Friday, February 14, 2014.
The Franklin office traveled to nearby Nashville to volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, while the Dallas office provided volunteer work at Mission Arlington.

The webinar discusses helpful tips and best practices
for working with architects, construction companies, vendors, and staff during the creation of a Hybrid OR. Lynne, who draws from over eight years of project management experience at GBA, in addition to 30 years of surgical clinical experience, says the information is geared toward an audience of nurses and nurse managers who may be involved in the development of a hybrid OR project. Hybrid ORs are “an ever developing process and there is no exact template.”

The recipient, Adeleh Nejati, M.Arch.,EDAC, is a PhD student at the Department of Architecture. The Gene D. Burton Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007.
