A not-so-average average
December 2012
The U.S. Department of Labor reports that the median number of years that wage and salary workers have been with their current employer is 4.6 years in 2012. At GBA, the average tenure of an associate is 8.4 years – almost twice that national average.
What does that 8.4 year number mean? We like to think it means that GBA is a great place to work. We all like each other (well, most of the time), and we care about each other. GBA recently conducted an internal survey about our corporate culture, and when asked to characterize GBA’s corporate values, our staff consistently cited honesty and integrity; making clients happy; family; ethics and objectivity – and they believe that GBA’s business practices are in alignment with those values. The overwhelming and underlying theme across almost all categories was family. “This is a family atmosphere. We care about each other.” “Unlike other companies, I would consider GBA my second family.” “Small, close knit, family feel.” “We are a family -- not just co-workers.”
A GBA consultant with eight years of experience has worked on many projects – has talked with hundreds of clinical users; has seen every kind of equipment in use across many hospitals; has walked a thousand miles in a hardhat on a construction site. They have also been educated through regular attendance at industry conferences like Healthcare Design, AORN, RSNA, ASHE PDC, and many others. All of our consultants also have prior experience in either a clinical or technical field, and they share that knowledge with each other. It all adds up to an above average product for our clients.
In the spirit of celebration this time of year, we’d like to celebrate some of our family who are on their way to that 8+ benchmark, or who have exceeded it. In 2012, we recognize the following for milestones of service at GBA:
George Kittos, BE – 5 years
Robert Hume, BS, EI, CCN – 5 years
Vicki Bechet, BSN, RNC – 10 years
Stephen Blalock, AS – 10 years
Vince Tenisci, BS, MBA– 10 years
Robert Vogt, AS – 10 years
Cynthia Mercante, BBA – 15 years
Suzan Logan, BBA – 20 years
Kelly McDaniel, BSRT,EDAC – 20 years
Congratulations!

Ted Hood Contributes to “Trends 2012” in HFM
December 2012
Ted Hood is a contributor to an article in a special section in Health Facilities Magazine’s December 2012 edition, “Trends 2012: Design.” The article is entitled “Building for Tomorrow” and addresses the impact of Decentralized care in hospital planning, design and construction. The article may be accessed here.
Our Top 2 Technology Takeaways from HEALTHCARE DESIGN 2012.
It wasn’t easy coming up with just two… But the GBA team picked these topics as the most important technology takeaways from the conference.
1. The one certainty in the midst of all the uncertainty is that technology will be a key to survival. Accountable Care Organization (ACO) outpatient clinics and services will require cost effective technologies that reduce readmission rates and support Lean processes. [Read more] Providers continue to wrestle with market positioning and strategic plans related to Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). How to address the Affordable Care Act’s impact on Medicare reimbursements including possible readmissions penalties, and predicting how providers’ quality of care and patient satisfaction scores will soon determine levels of pay are BIG unanswered questions. One thing is for certain – TECHNOLOGY will play a major role in how hospitals, physicians, and other healthcare providers will address these challenges. High level data capture and advanced reporting capabilities in support of complete, coordinated patient population care management will be mission critical. Understanding and managing the many complex healthcare technology integrations will be the key to survival.
2. POEs rule. They determine the ROI on your project. Technology investments must be implemented with the proper operational configuration and commissioning to achieve needed efficiencies. [Read more] Lean Healthcare is a goal of every healthcare construction project. Goals are set and processes are redefined – but, now that your new facility is open, are the goals that were set being achieved? Are the processes that were envisioned successfully launched? Post Occupancy Evaluations are critical to fine tune and adjust operational practices to maximize results. For many healthcare facilities, the value of the advanced technologies purchased to streamline workflows, reduce errors, and create efficiencies are diminished if staff fail to utilize all aspects of the new technologies correctly. Evaluating work flows and adjusting technology configurations and protocols are critical to maximizing technology investments.
GBA Presents Two Sessions at HCD12
November 2012
Technology at the Bedside – It’s More Than Nurse Call and an IV Pump
Nov. 4 | 9:45 a.m. [E14]
by Ted Hood and Vicki Bechet
Sophisticated EMRs and nurse call systems create efficiencies, increase patient safety, improve outcomes and support LEAN workflows. Through real-life examples, this program will examine the process required to support care delivery and bedside information capture, and the effect on planning, design, and construction. Attendees will hear about recent advancements in bedside medical technology; identify the types of information captured in the medical record; assess physical, operational, privacy, and safety challenges typically faced in both newer and older facilities; and evaluate the impact technology and EMR integration has on nursing workflow.
Medical Device Alarms – Strategies to Avoid Fatigue
Nov. 6 | 1 p.m. [E95]
by Ted Hood and Jolene Lyons
In an effort to improve patient care, alarms and audio alerts on medical equipment have dramatically increased in the past ten years. The unintended effect is "alarm fatigue" where staff can become easily desensitized, overwhelmed, and confused by the noise, compounded by responding to a high rate of false alarms. In 2011 ECRI Institute ranked alarm fatigue as second on the list of its top ten health technology hazards. This presentation will examine current Joint Commission and FDA positions on this issue, as well as design and implementation strategies for construction projects to minimize this very real threat to patient safety.
